Why your payment is getting declined or isn’t working

Payments can be declined for a number of reasons. Here are some of the common errors you may be shown and what you can do to help resolve them.

Complete the authentication request to confirm your credit or debit card

If your bank requires authentication, they’ll send over an authentication request that Airbnb will display for you to complete. If you fail or exit out of the authentication request, you may be shown any of the following errors:

  • Looks like your bank declined the payment
  • If you fail the security check your transaction will be declined

Make sure your contact information with your credit card provider or bank is up-to-date, and contact them if you’re having trouble with the authentication request. Find out more about how to confirm your debit or credit card with 3DS authentication.

Check that your ZIP code, CVV, and other info is correct

When the billing address, CVV, card number, or other info you entered doesn’t match what’s associated with your payment method, it could prevent your payment from going through. In those cases, you may receive one of the following errors:

  • There was an error adding your payment method
  • Postal code must match your bank's records
  • Server error prevented your request from being completed
  • Transaction not allowed
  • Specified target currency is not allowed for this country

It's important to double-check the info you’ve entered, making sure to add the details exactly as they appear on your card or bank statement. If you’re still having trouble, reach out to your bank or financial institution, or try using a different payment method.

Try making the payment again later

If you receive any of the following errors, it’s possible that our systems detected unusual activity on your account:

  • You have reached your Airbnb access quota
  • Looks like this payment method can't be added
  • This credit card can’t be added right now

You’ll need to wait up to 24 hours to log in to your account and try making the payment again.

Use a different payment method

If you’re shown any of the following errors, you may need to use a different payment method:

  • Something went wrong
  • Unable to verify your card
  • Unable to perform action
  • Unable to authorize the payment to your credit card
  • Invalid amount
  • Payment Error: Amount is too large
  • Do not honor

First contact your bank or financial institution. If you’re still having trouble, try booking your reservation using a different payment method.

Change the currency you’re paying in

There might be restrictions on the currency at the time of payment due to factors like the country in which you reside or the payment method you're using. In these instances, you’ll receive the following error: Can’t complete this payment in your currency.

You can try paying in the suggested currency, or use a different payment method.

Review your payment method’s maximum transaction amount

It's possible that your payment method has a maximum transaction amount or daily limit set by your bank or financial institution. If the payment amount exceeds this limit, your payment won’t go through. In these cases, you’ll receive any of the following errors:

  • Let's try again. Sometimes changing your currency works.
  • account_volume_limit

It's best to contact your bank or financial institution to find out if they can provide a solution or increase your daily limit. You can also try using a different payment method.

Use desktop or mobile browser to make the payment

When using Alipay as your payment method in the Airbnb app, you may receive the following error: Order does not exist - Alipay.

If this happens, try completing the booking on desktop or mobile browser.

If you receive a different error

It’s possible to receive an error that isn’t listed in this article. It’s best to first contact your bank or financial institution to find out why your payment isn’t working.

If you’re still having trouble, try using a different payment method or contact us for help resolving the issue.
